Let’s welcome the NK-Pop group Moranbong! This group of five main vocal singers accompanied by another five musicians is all the craze, which was formed under the guidance of North Korean’s young leader, Kim Jong-Un. This group which debuted in July 2012 shows contrast from Kim Jong-il’s former leadership and entertainment. While Kim Jong-il was a known movie-buff, his son may be taking the route to make a name for himself as a music-buff. Also knowing that Kim Jong-Un’s wife, Ri Sol-Ju was a former musician may have been an extra push for Moranbong.

Of course, NK-Pop doesn’t booty shake or sing about crazy crayons or bash on the government. It’s rather the opposite and sings patriotic songs that uplift the North Korean government and its leaderships, especially the esteemed Dear Leader. The style of music or melody harkens back to the decades old “trot” of Japanese and South Korean folksy melodies. Their movements also appear highly choreographed and trained. For those who have seen the Mass Games and the arduous training that participants undertake, this doesn’t come as much as a surprise. It will be interesting to see if this new NK-pop music will eventually make its way into the Mass Games, sort like a upgrade.

The group continues to tour North Korean military barracks and performs their single “Let’s Learn” which is dedicated to the learning how to make their nation stronger. Below is their “Let’s Learn” song performance.
